Really what it comes down to is Serphy has been hanging around *-journal RP and fic communities and I come from a forum/tabletop background. Although we both lean more or less narrativist, as opposed to the simulationist/"crunchy" aspects that a lot of tabletop gamers like.

Also I want Serphy's babies. Or their first novel. Whichever, really. Although come to think of it the novel has a higher chance of making money and supporting us in our old age. >_>

Anyway.

Part one here.

( Full log after the cut. )

comments

Speaking of handing off or sharing narrative control, here's a pretty good example with SilverSerpher. They comment that they're "kind of an RP addict" and in a later session with a third party I comment that Serphy does freeform as well as or better than I do, and indeed, they are probably the only person I've played with from the Dreamwidth IRC channel who's done this kind of thing without my introducing them to it. They slip details into the setting unobtrusively and naturally, which is awesome, and gives me clues to work off of in building things further. But, in a way, it can be harder to accommodate a full partner than it is to GM for someone who's a more passive player, because the negotiation between you for narrative responsibility is at the forefront, as you can see in the beginning section of the log. Another interesting feature that also came up in "The Plan" is using the dice-rolling bot (called Fig-Bit) to randomize things a little without specifically quantifying things, especially in suggesting a theme.

I wonder what a linguistics or game theory researcher would make of this.

Anyway.

Part two here.

( Full log behind the cut. )

comments

I lied, there's more Changes, although I think this is where we actually stopped. The comment about "I like it better now that I'm going to get some answers" still strikes me, since half the point for me of doing something like this is seeing what happens when people don't have the answers and need to investigate. Which, if nothing else, speaks to the power imbalance between the person controlling the narrative and the person playing through the narrative. Although in "The Plan" I tried to hand over narrative control a bit, and the player didn't bite. In my old old freeforms with Amber we would share narrative responsibility, and the control of the setting was joint, usually negotiated by which character of ours owned or tended to the location in question. Although when it came to wider world-building I seem to remember me taking the lead there too. >_> Suspicious.

Anyway.

Part one here.
Part two here.
Part three here.

( Full log after the cut. )

comments

So this is the third and last part of Changes. Yes, it's incomplete, although Rainne has recently expressed interest in continuing. I still have a partial state of play stored in my memory, amazingly enough, and reading the logs has helped solidify it. So there could be more Changes in the future, but I don't have a plot written out or anything. I usually make it up on the fly and try to be consistent with what has already come, as far as I can be.

I didn't really think about the process of changing the players while I was doing it, but it's possible that the confusion at the end of this session was partially a result of having two players switch off piloting the POV character. Nuances get lost when you switch, and people take subtle cues different ways, which is part of the joy and the frustration in trying to run a dreamlike freeform for people whose dreams cannot and never will be like yours.

Anyway.

Part one here.

Part two here.

Part four here.

( Full log after the cut. )

comments

The Google Maps link in this freeform is the same place, but the imagery has been updated since I ran this, and flooding appears to have changed the shape of the river in the period between the 2007-ish images I was using and the current (2013) ones. The sandy channel running on the north side of the wooded strip was either flooded or much deeper, making that strip into an island. I don't think I've ever been to this location in real life, but Iowa is where I grew up and what I know. The dream landscape has changed since I moved away, and the previous installment reflected some of those alterations to my nocturnal Waterloo. Which is more of a side note than anything else.

I think this was the most fun session of Changes, just in terms of the joking tone, but not the most successful in terms of atmosphere or weirdness, which is something I think I've gone further towards in dreamlike freeforms that I ran side by side and after this. Because, let's face it, dreams are deeply weird.

Anyway.

Part one here.
Part three here.

( Full log after the cut. )

comments

So this is the freeform session that kicked off a spate of similar "dreams", as Sophira called them, over the next weekend in the #dw-dnd sidechannel.
This freeform adventure, which happened last year, was an attempt on my part to bring some mythical and storytelling themes into my roleplay. I'd been doing a superpowers-themed freeform the day before with a different player, and wanted to break it up for the audience. Eventually it got a Thousand and One Nights vibe going on, and definitely isn't complete, but unlikely to continue, considering the last and only session was so long ago. I had a lot of fun with the flowery language though and would love to play with Randomling again. :)

( Full log behind the cut. )

comments
